How does layered teaching work in practice?

Layered teaching is a didactic approach in which you build one lesson with a base layer for everyone and optional deeper layers for those who can handle more. It's a solution for MBO levels 2-4 in the same class or HBO foundation-vs-main phase: no preparing three versions of a lesson, one shared end point. This article explains how to apply it in 7 steps, with subject examples and pitfalls.

What is layered teaching?

Layered teaching = one lesson, multiple depth levels. All students start on the base layer (shared minimum). Those who can handle more open a deeper layer — class-wide led by the teacher or independently within a learning path.

It differs from traditional differentiation because you don't prepare three versions of a lesson. It's one lesson, with optional extensions you switch on or off per concept. As a result, cognitive load is appropriate (Sweller) and scaffolding is structural (Vygotsky).

7 steps to convert a lesson to layered teaching

    Formulate one learning objective for the whole class

    Start with the minimum objective everyone must reach — not level-differentiated, but one shared end point. This becomes your base layer.

    Write the base layer first

    Develop the lesson as if everyone is at the base level. A complete lesson without deeper layers. Done in 80% of the time you normally spend on a single level.

    Identify 2 or 3 deepening opportunities per slide

    Per concept: what is a logical next-level question? A more complex case, an exception, a conceptual link. Not for every slide — only where it fits naturally.

    Write the deeper layers briefly

    A deeper layer is not a second lesson. 3-5 sentences, one example, one check. Goal: quick and optional.

    Decide when layers appear

    Add a formative check per layer

    A layer without a check is lost information. One poll or quiz question per layer shows you who picked it up and who didn't.

    Test with 1 class before rolling it out

    First lesson: just you and one class. Ask afterwards: "Which layer did you open and why?". Below 20% deepening → the deeper layer is too hard. Above 70% → the base layer is too easy.

Subject example: anatomy of the heart (MBO-V level 4)

  • Base layer: four chambers, two valves, two circulations. Everyone knows this.
  • Deeper layer 1: what happens in cardiac decompensation? Pathophysiological logic.
  • Deeper layer 2: how do you interpret an ECG abnormality as an ICU nurse?

One lesson, three levels activated. The student who wants to work in the ICU sees the relevance of the basics because they can open deeper layer 2.

What is the difference between layered teaching and differentiation?+

Differentiation is the overarching didactic strategy in which you adapt content, process or product to the student. Layered teaching is one concrete form: one lesson with multiple layers, no separate versions. Other forms of differentiation are ability groups or choice assignments. Layered teaching scales more easily because you don't prepare multiple lessons.

Does layered teaching work for every age?+

The didactic principle (base layer + deepening) works from the upper grades of primary school and higher. It works for lower secondary education, and it works excellently for MBO and HBO. For young children (years 1-5) the cognitive demand of "click on if you want more" is often too abstract.

How many layers can a slide have at most?+

In practice: base + 1 or 2 deeper layers. More than 3 layers becomes unmanageable for the teacher and confusing for students. In LectaMe it is technically unlimited, but deliberately limiting it to 2-3 layers works better.

What do you do when fast students want to move on while the class is still on the basics?+
