What is active learning?
Active learning is an educational approach in which students are cognitively active during learning — by answering questions, analysing cases, or peer teaching — instead of passively consuming explanations. Active learning is learning in which the student is cognitively active engaged with the material — not just present, but mentally at work. This can be through answering questions, reasoning out loud, making decisions in a case, or connecting with prior knowledge. The passive "listen and nod" attitude disappears.
What does the research say?
Freeman et al. (2014) conducted a meta-analysis of 225 studies in STEM education. Result: active methods raised average grades by 6% and reduced dropout by 12% compared to traditional lectures. For non-STEM subjects the effect is smaller but consistently positive.
The mechanism: active learning connects new knowledge with prior knowledge (Ausubel), distributes cognitive load (Sweller), and provides immediate feedback that makes misconceptions visible before they take root.
