What is blended learning?

Blended learning is education that combines classroom contact with independent online work — not as separate delivery formats, but didactically integrated. A large meta-analysis (Means et al., 2010) showed that blended learning scores on average 0.35 effect size higher than purely classroom-based teaching. This article describes six practical models, pros and cons, and the difference from hybrid teaching.

Definition

Blended learning combines classroom contact (face-to-face or synchronous online) with independent online work (asynchronous) in a purposeful way — not "what fits my timetable" but "what suits this learning objective". Not the same as hybrid teaching (physical + online participants simultaneously in one session).

Six practical models

Flipped classroom

Students study theory at home (video, learning path), classroom time is reserved for deepening and practice. Works especially well for subjects with a lot of theory and few questions during explanation.

Station rotation

Within a single lesson, students rotate between stations: online assignment, classroom explanation, peer discussion. Works well for MBO with heterogeneous levels.

Lab rotation

Classroom explanation in the room, then moving to a computer lab for independent digital work. A classic hybrid model.

Individual rotation

Each student follows a personalised path through online and classroom activities. Requires data and good coordination; mainly suited to adaptive learning tracks.

Flex model

Mainly online; the teacher is available on demand for coaching. Strong in higher adult education and part-time HBO.

A La Carte

Students take some modules entirely online (e.g. GDPR training) and others in class. It varies per module, not per day.

Does blended learning work for all subject areas?+

For MBO and HBO Bachelor's blended works excellently; for master's education often less so.
