MBO healthcare: SBAR communication in practice

Opening (3 min)
Learning objectives: after this lesson you can explain SBAR, draw up an SBAR report, and recognise when which components are critical.
What is SBAR? (7 min)
Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation. Theory slides with a diagram. For MBO 3: basic explanation. For MBO 4 (layered): why SBAR originated (aviation safety) and how it was translated into the healthcare context.
Example of a good SBAR (5 min)
Case: a patient with shortness of breath. The teacher works through the SBAR report step by step. Students see what it looks like in practice.
Example of a poor SBAR (5 min)
The same patient, but now a clumsy report with missing information. Multiple choice: which essential information is missing? Students discover the weak points themselves.
Hands-on practice (15 min)
Students receive three patient cases via QR. For each case: type your SBAR report in an open text field. The teacher sees all submissions and can discuss the top and bottom 3.
Formative check (8 min)
Four multiple-choice questions: which S component belongs here, which A conclusion is logical, when to add an R priority or not. A pass rate per learning objective.
Reflection and close (4 min)
Open question: what will you do differently in practice tomorrow? Exit ticket. Preparation for the next lesson.
Depth layer for MBO 4 (optional, 3 min)
SBAR variants: ISBARR (Introduction added), I-SBAR-R (Read-back). When to use which variant. Only unfold for a group that has mastered the core material.
Differentiation in practice
One class contains both MBO 3 and 4 students. Level 3 practises SBAR as basic reporting. Level 4 additionally learns when SBAR variants (ISBARR, I-SBAR-R) apply. Both groups are in the same lesson — no second round of preparation for the teacher.
Depth phase 8 is opened only for the group that has mastered the core material. The other students finish the lesson at a natural point without feeling that "something is missing".
